Mission: To train all vaulters to the best of their potential through rigor and discipline in a supportive and safe environment!

Character: Our club aims to develop athletes of character by developing a strong work ethic in a safe, disciplined, and rigorous environment.

Safety: We stress safety first when training for the vault. Our athletes are properly taught the correct mechanics to safely vault in practices and meets.

Coaching Staff:

Mike Wagenveld - Club Director
Coach Wagenveld has been coaching for over 30 years, working with middle school, high school, and collegiate vaulters. He was a Collegiate Decathlete specializing in the vault. Coach Wagenveld has coached many CA State medalists and coached the all-time best HS girls squad in US history, with 3 girls over 13' feet in one year at Poway HS. He has retired from teaching after 30 years and spends a lot of time coaching our Elite girls and helping athletes with College recruiting.

Peter Brooks:
Coach Brooks competed in the decathlon and pole vault first at Grossmont College then at SDSU. In the 26 years that he has been coaching the vault at Vista High School, the program has been regarded as one of the strongest in San Diego County. Vista HS boys have had 6 athletes over 15’6, and 19 athletes over 14’. He has coached two CIF champions and sent 8 athletes to the California State Championships with three athletes standing on the podium.
Coach Brooks has a BA in Social Studies from SDSU and a masters degree in Performance Psychology from National University. He teaches psychology and history at Vista High School.

Kayla Smith:
Coach Kayla Smith is an accomplished vaulter from the University of Georgia where she holds the school record and was a four time NCAA First Team All-American. She competed in the US Olympics Trials in 2021. She has coached at multiple youth pole vault camps and assisted younger athletes on her Collegiate team. She was the NCAA Woman of the Year nominee and the UGA Arthur Ashe Jr Sports Scholar Award Winner.

David Freund:
Coach Freund has many years of coaching experience at several local high schools as well as 6 years coaching at the Collegiate level at Cal State San Marcos where he produced 3 NAIA All-American Athletes.
He is a former Collegiate vaulter at Cal State San Marcos. Coach Freund is currently the Varsity coach at Westview High School.

Michael Wagenveld:
Coach Michael was a Collegiate vaulter at Claremont McKenna College and set the school record. He was an NCAA National Qualifier as well as a California State Qualifier in High School. He has coached the pole vault team at Escondido HS and has several years of experience coaching both group and private sessions at NCPV Club.

Arianna Soriano:
Coach Arianna Soriano is a multi-faceted coach in strength and conditioning, track and field, and health and wellness. She is a natural teacher and has experience working with elementary, middle school, and high school students. As a former Poway vaulter, she started off as Coach Wagenveld’s assistant pole vault coach at Poway High School and took over the program in 2023. That year she coached 2 athletes at the California State Championships, both finishing on the podium.
Coach Soriano holds a B.S. in Marine Biology and B.A. in Spanish from UCLA. She is currently working on her Master’s in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Many of our assistant coaches are current Collegiate vaulters who have gone through our program and teach from first-hand experience of the NCPV Club system.
